THE RESPONES OF THE MID-CENTURY HYBRID LILIES OF QUEL A GROWTH REGULATING CHEMICAL

Subject:

Pennsylvania Flower Growers #242

Abstract:

Mass market outlets probably will increase the volume of colored hybrid lily plants sold at Easter and in the spring. Enchantment, a DeGraaff hybrid, can be held in storage up to 9 months and forced in 65 to 70 days. Bulbs could be planted in early February for a Mother's Day crop. The smaller size bulbs could be grown in 4- and 5-inch pots and spaced almost pot-to-pot for a high potential net return. The hybrid lilies were developed primarily for the home garden and for cut flowers. Thus, one of the major problems in growing them as potted plants is height reduction. Until recently the only effective means of reducing height was to withhold water and fertilization. However, this method of height reduction did not always keep the plants short enough and smaller sized leaves and flowers often accompanied the shorter stems.
