RESEARCH AT PENN STATE RIEGER ELATIOR BEGONIAS PROGRESS REPORT I
Subject:
Pennsylvania Flower Growers #263
Abstract:
The Rieger begonias can be produced at any time of the year. There does not seem to be any seasonal prejudice such as there is with poinsettias for Christmas and lilies for Easter. Thus, if the grower doesn't sell out his begonias for a given holiday, he probably can sell them during the post holiday period. The use of Rieger begonias for autumn festivals, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter and Mothers Day's already common in Europe. The ultimate consumer can have a double value in the spring. Begonias can be enjoyed in the home at Mother's Day and placed outside in semishade for flowering all summer. A series of experiments were conducted with Rieger Elatior Begonias1 at Penn State. These experiments involved temperature, day length, fertility, irrigation regime and growth retardant studies with 'Schwabenland Red', 'S. Orange', 'S. Pink', and 'Krefield Orange'.
